I love watching TV. Specifically Netflix. I think TV shows have so much more to offer than what is presented on the surface. Not only are they entertaining, but they are also an opportunity to showcase what women are capable of, even if it’s within a fictional world. Some of my favorite shows had some incredible, strong, and empowering women and today I’d like to share some of my favorites. So here it is, my favorite and most bad ass characters in TV:
1. Daenerys Targaryen – Game of Thrones
“Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons”. Every time Daenerys says her entire title, with the same strength each time, sends chills down my spine. She has one of my favorite character developments of all time. From being sold to the Dothraki by her evil brother to becoming mother of dragons and taking over cities time and time again, Daenerys has proven that any woman from any point in her life can find the strength to overcome adversity and become an all-ruling and badass Queen.
2. Arya Stark – Game of Thrones
If anyone out there is a Game of Thrones fan like I am, you loved Arya Stark from day one. This girl always had ambitions to be more than just a lady or the woman by a king’s side. She wanted to fight like any other man around her could. She proved early on that she had the skills to fight even better than her own younger brothers and it didn’t stop there. After the beheading of her father, Ned Stark, Arya made sure to get revenge and anyone who dared cross her path saw the consequences. Arya Stark has strength within her that I don’t know I could ever have. She owns who she is and does it with such power that it’s inspiring to everyone around her, even the men smart enough to recognize how amazing she really is. Arya Stark, you are goals.
3. Brienne of Tarth – Game of Thrones
Brienne of Tarth, another badass lady who defies gender roles in Game of Thrones. Although she is ridiculed and mocked for being a more masculine woman. Brienne of Tarth, however, never let these negative comments get her down. She is arguably the most honorable woman on this show and will do anything to maintain her honor. Brienne doesn’t let the men around her belittle her into becoming something she isn’t and continues to kick ass against all odds.
4. Leslie Knope – Parks and Recreation
Leslie Knope is the girlfriend, best friend, and politician everyone in this world needs. She is selfless and fearless and never let anyone try to tell he she couldn’t do anything she set her mind to. Starting from a position in government that would seemingly get her nowhere in her career, Leslie was able to overcome all of her obstacles and work her ass over to get to become the successful politician she ended up being. Leslie Knope proves that if you have a passion and you believe in yourself you can achieve anything. In a time in my life where applying for internships and making it through my last year of college feels impossible, I think of Leslie Knope and immediately feel the wave of confidence I need to reach my goals.
5. Annalise Keating – How To Get Away With Murder
If I’ve learned anything from watching How To Get Away With Murder, it’s that if I ever want to be a lawyer, I only want to learn from Annalise Keating. Not only is Annalise clearly a genius, she also doesn’t let anyone get in her way when she’s trying to reach a goal (like covering up murder for example). Although her character can be controversial, she owns who she is and does it with such an amazing power. She wore the pants in her marriage and continued to do so throughout the entire series.
6. Olivia Benson – Law and Order: SVU
I think we all know after all of these years of Lawn and Order: SVU being aired on TV, Olivia Benson is literally the GOAT. She dedicated her entire life to arresting rapists, sex offenders, child molesters, and more of the same. Her fearlessness has helped countless women and children throughout the entirety of the show and although she has her moments of feeling down and scared, she always comes out strong and fights for those who don’t have the ability or voice to fight on their own. Olivia Benson is the hero that we not only want but NEED.
