Welcome back FemStop Fam to my second post EVER filled with all that’s wrong with the world (kidding – you’ll learn that I may very well be the most dramatic person you’ll ever meet, well, electronically meet? Whatever. The point is I exaggerate a lot about the fate of the world’s existence). I am currently sitting in the Eatontown, NJ Starbucks ready to unload all of the thoughts that flood my head WHEN SUDDENLY I look up and directly across from me sitting cozy on a couch is the cutest little puppy I’ve ever seen. Her name is Tiffany, according to her owner who must be in his late sixties and is wearing a hat that looks like it belonged to Indiana Jones himself, and I think I might be in love.
Back to the point of this post today, I am writing to you all about an issue that is so important to me and so dear to my heart.
In light of the inauguration of our new president, it is more important than ever to not only talk about feminism and understand it, but also to fight to make sure that our rights are still protected and we continue to maintain the work that has been done for the past hundred or so years. As I’ve made clear in my previous post, our battle is not over, and now it’s becoming more than just a battle, but a war. Rights that we have become accustomed to, like the right to choose for our own bodies, have been threatened by our new administration. Government officials and pro-life movements have fought to defund Planned Parenthood, and facilities like it, due to their anti-abortion agendas. This is a huge issue that many people, women included, do not realize is so serious and so scary.
Reproductive rights, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, is the right for women to choose for their bodies without discrimination and to have access to safe and affordable reproductive health care. Reproductive rights mean that YOU, as a woman, have the right to choose for YOUR body. The reason we have to fight for this basic right is due to the fight to defund Planned Parenthood, a facility that has approximately 4.6 million patients per year, by pro-life advocates and some government officials because of anti-abortion beliefs. The problematic misconception behind Planned Parenthood is that it’s sole and main purpose is to administer abortions and because of this, many have tirelessly fought to make sure that Planned Parenthood is no longer government funded. This is just all around wrong, misguided, and to be perfectly blatant, it’s ignorant. Planned Parenthood is not this baby killing, evil, machine that fuels abortions left and right. In reality, abortions only account for 3% of the services that they offer in a year, according to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Among their services are sex education, cancer and STD screenings, contraceptive services, and more.
Basically what I’m trying to say here is, taking away Planned Parenthood and ways for women to receive proper health care for reproductive issues, is just hurting us more than it’s preventing abortions. In fact, according to CNN, maternal mortality rates have DOUBLED in Texas, a state where facilities like Planned Parenthood have declined drastically in recent years due to cuts. From the years 2010-2012 the number of deaths caused by maternal issues has grown from 72 to 148 deaths. Prior to these major cuts statewide, rates had been decreasing from year to year, but since Texan politicians have voted to defund Planned Parenthood and have succeeded in doing so, so many women are suffering the consequences. Many women, including those who choose to keep their child, need the services that Planned Parenthood provides to maintain their reproductive health and prevent illnesses like cervical cancer, breast cancer, life-threatening STDs, and so much more.
Even if you look at this through the anti-abortion lens and you believe that abortions are not justifiable no matter the circumstance, defunding Planned Parenthood isn’t going to make them stop. The sad truth is that even if you take away abortion options like Planned Parenthood, women will go back to resorting to the unsafe and often deadly ways of handling that situation.
If you have gotten this far, through all the technicality and definitions, I hope that I was able to articulate the issue with defunding Planned Parenthood and limiting reproductive rights. Taking away these basic rights is only hurting women and is failing to tackle the issue that pro-life activists and other government officials have with abortions. If you want a productive way to reduce the amount of abortions that happen across our country there are about a million other ways to do so without putting women in harms way.
The fact of the matter is women are going to have recreational sex. We are in 2017 now and with social media apps like Tinder and Bumble it is easier than ever to enjoy meaningless sex whenever and wherever you want (and I do mean whenever AND wherever, this is a no judgment zone ladies). Instead of shaming women for this, especially because for whatever reason it is much more acceptable for men to be engaging in the same thing (still waiting on a concrete male version of the word “slut”), we should be educating our teens and young adults on safe sex and offering more outlets for contraceptives like birth control. The craziest part is that pro-life activists don’t want you to have abortions but then also don’t believe in birth control, which basically leaves you zero options for a realistic lifestyle as a modern woman. Whether or not you choose to have random sex or you’re saving yourself for marriage or WHATEVER the case may be, if you’re not ready to have a kid, you’re just not ready, and MISTAKES DO HAPPEN. No woman should ever have to feel that they are trapped in a pregnancy they didn’t ask for and didn’t want.
To sum up this little rant I’ve gone on, reproductive rights are not only important but also necessary. Being able to access safe and affordable reproductive health care WILL SAVE LIVES. Defunding Planned Parenthood IS NOT HELPING ANYONE. Again for the people in the back, DEFUNDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD DOES NOT HELP ANYONE. I hope that through this post I’ve been able to express to you how important reproductive rights are and now more than ever. With this new administration that has somehow slithered its way into the white house, we need to fight even harder to keep our basic reproductive rights.
